Japan's energy giant ENEOS has announced a significant investment of $200 million in setting up a green hydrogen production plant in Queensland, Australia. The project will see the construction of a hydrogen demonstration plant at Bulwer Island, with an expected daily production capacity of 680 kilograms of green hydrogen, starting from 2026. The hydrogen will be in the form of methylcyclohexane (MCH), which allows for convenient transportation at room temperature and normal pressure. A portion of the produced hydrogen will be exported to Japan. ENEOS is collaborating with partners such as Chiyoda Corporation, Sumitomo Electric Industries, and local Brisbane companies like GPA and GRPS. The venture is supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Green Innovation (GI) Fund. The project is expected to create over 100 new job opportunities in Brisbane during its construction and demonstration period. Additionally, this initiative is part of a broader clean hydrogen trade collaboration between Australia and Japan. The use of MCH as a hydrogen carrier in oil tankers for transportation underlines the commitment to sustainable energy practices and supports Japan's target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The partnership signifies a positive step towards promoting green energy and environmental sustainability in the energy industry.
