Germany and Saudi Arabia Sign Green Hydrogen Supply Deal for European Market
Key Ideas
  • Germany's SEFE signed a deal with ACWA Power to supply 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to Europe from 2030 onwards.
  • The green hydrogen, produced with wind and solar power, will be transported as ammonia and has an energy content of 6.7 terawatt-hours.
  • SEFE aims to become a key player in green hydrogen production and trading, supporting Germany's hydrogen strategy for energy diversification.
  • The agreement, signed in Riyadh, highlights the commitment of both countries to green energy and sustainable practices.
Germany's state-owned Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia's ACWA Power for the supply of green hydrogen to the European market. Under this agreement, 200,000 tons of green hydrogen produced using wind and solar power will be shipped to Europe annually from 2030 in the form of ammonia. This hydrogen will carry an energy content of almost 6.7 terawatt-hours, supporting Germany's initiative to import between 45 and 90 terawatt-hours of hydrogen by 2030. Germany views hydrogen as essential for its energy needs alongside renewables. ACWA Power plans to be a significant player in green hydrogen production and distribution. SEFE will co-invest and act as the main off-taker, utilizing its position as a major energy trading company in Europe. This partnership signals a positive step towards sustainable energy practices. SEFE has previously secured deals with Brazil's Elektrobras and Norway's Equinor for hydrogen imports, aiming to import 360-500 terawatt-hours of hydrogen by 2045. The agreement exemplifies the commitment of Germany and Saudi Arabia to green energy and international cooperation for a sustainable future.
