Key Ideas
- Three pilot projects approved to explore green hydrogen usage in steel production under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
- Selected companies include Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL).
- Government providing Rs 347 crore in support to launch initiatives aiming to demonstrate the safe and economical use of hydrogen in steelmaking.
- Projects expected to be operational within three years to advance green hydrogen technology in the steel sector.
The Indian government has given the green light to three pilot projects to investigate the utilization of green hydrogen in steel production as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. These projects, led by Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd, Simplex Castings Ltd, and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL), will collectively have a production capacity of approximately 3,290 tonnes per day. With a focus on reducing carbon emissions in steelmaking, these initiatives will replace coal with hydrogen to explore more sustainable practices. To facilitate the launch of these projects, the government is offering Rs 347 crore in support. The primary goal of these initiatives is to demonstrate the viability of using hydrogen safely and cost-effectively in steel manufacturing processes. The projects are projected to become operational within the next three years, emphasizing the commitment to scaling up green hydrogen technology within the steel industry. This move aligns with the wider national focus on promoting renewable energy and reducing the carbon footprint in key industrial sectors.
