Revolutionizing Maritime Transport: World's Largest Hydrogen-Powered Ferries
Key Ideas
- MAN Cryo to provide key technology for the world's largest hydrogen-fueled ferries for Torghatten Nord in Norway.
- Vessels designed by Norwegian Ship Design Company and built in Turkey, with hydrogen equipment installed in Norway.
- MAN Energy Solutions emphasizes a sustainable marine future with advanced engineering and green hydrogen propulsion.
- Torghatten Nord aims to revolutionize ferry transportation by transitioning to zero-emission operations with these hydrogen-powered vessels.
Norwegian ferry operator Torghatten Nord has ordered two massive hydrogen-powered ferries that will be the largest in the world, with a length of 117 meters and the capacity to accommodate up to 120 cars. MAN Cryo, a specialist in cryogenic equipment, will supply crucial technology for these groundbreaking vessels operating on green, compressed hydrogen. The ferries will traverse Norway's longest route between Bodø and Lofoten, covering approximately 166 kilometers. Designed by The Norwegian Ship Design Company, the ferries will be constructed at Turkey’s Cemre Shipyard and outfitted at Myklebust shipyard in Norway, where the hydrogen equipment will be installed. Torghatten Nord's operational director expressed excitement over extending cooperation with MAN Cryo from LNG to hydrogen. MAN Energy Solutions Sweden's managing director highlighted the company's commitment to sustainable marine operations and reducing ecological footprints through innovative hydrogen-powered solutions. This project signifies a significant leap towards zero-emission ferry transportation, marking a pivotal moment in the maritime sector's transition to cleaner and greener operations.
