Scale Microgrids Expands Clean Energy Footprint in Bridgeport with CHP Fuel Cell Project Acquisition
Key Ideas
- Scale Microgrids acquires a 9.6-MW CHP and fuel cell project in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to provide heat and power in the South End region.
- The project involves the conversion of natural gas into hydrogen through steam reforming, generating combustion-free electricity.
- Local energy reliability, greenhouse gas reduction, and economic benefits are expected from the Charter Oak CHP project, supporting various local entities.
- The acquisition of Scale Microgrids by EGT Transition Infrastructure demonstrates a commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and community development.
Scale Microgrids is expanding its clean energy footprint in Bridgeport, Connecticut, by acquiring a 9.6-MW combined heat and power (CHP) fuel cell project. The project, located in Bridgeport's South End region, will involve the conversion of natural gas into hydrogen through steam reforming to generate combustion-free electricity using fuel cells paired with a thermal loop system. The acquisition from NuPower includes fabrication, installation, and operation of the hydrogen fuel cells by HyAxiom. With financial support from Investec and MUFG, and tax equity provided by Foss & Co., Scale Microgrids aims to drive economic, reliability, and sustainability outcomes in Bridgeport. The Charter Oak project, in development for about a decade, will supply heat and hot water to local entities like the University of Bridgeport, Approved Storage and Waste Hauling, and Bassick High School, helping to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions. This project is expected to enhance the local energy grid's reliability and provide baseload power production. Scale Microgrids, initially focused on microgrid development, has broadened its scope into community solar projects. The acquisition by EGT Transition Infrastructure signifies a continued commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and contributing to community development.
