The joint venture between bp and Iberdrola España has commenced construction on Spain's largest green hydrogen project in Castellón. The plant, operated by Castellón Green Hydrogen S.L., is set to create up to 500 jobs during construction, with 25 Spanish companies participating in the development. The €70 million investment project includes a 25 MW electrolyser powered by renewable electricity from Iberdrola's wind and photovoltaic farms. Expected to be operational by the second half of 2026, the plant aims to produce 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, reducing CO2 emissions by 23,000 tonnes. The initiative, with key equipment manufactured in Spain, aligns with EU requirements for green hydrogen production. The project not only benefits the refinery in Castellón but also targets industries like ceramics, chemical, and heavy transport for decarbonisation. Additionally, the initiative has received €15 million in funding from EU programs within the Spanish Recovery and Resilience Plan. The confidence in Spanish companies is evident through the recent contract awarded to Imefy for the manufacturing and supply of a power transformer, emphasizing the growth of the renewable hydrogen value chain and creating industrial opportunities in the region.
