Toyo Glass, a Japanese glass bottle manufacturer, has been chosen by NEDO for its 2024 Regional Hydrogen Utilization Technology Development project. This initiative focuses on developing a glass-melting furnace equipped with an on-site hydrogen production facility. Toyo's involvement in this project comes after its selection in 2023 for research on oxygen-hydrogen combustion for glass production. The primary goal is to address the challenge of decarbonizing glass production, traditionally reliant on fossil fuels. Toyo's solution involves transitioning to hydrogen fuel, a cleaner alternative. The key hurdle in adopting hydrogen is establishing a reliable supply system, which Toyo plans to address through on-site hydrogen production using water electrolysis. By generating hydrogen on demand, the need for large storage tanks and safety concerns associated with high-pressure liquefied hydrogen are eliminated. The project will start with a small-scale model of the facility, aiming to integrate the technology into full-scale glass-melting furnaces.
