The Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub project is set to revolutionize the city's transportation sector by introducing green hydrogen as a fuel source. The hub, situated at Hareness Road, will incorporate a hydrogen production, storage, and distribution facility powered by electricity generated from a neighboring solar farm on the former Ness landfill site. The project, expected to commence production in 2026, is anticipated to yield around 300 tonnes of green hydrogen yearly during its initial phase. This production capacity will enable the hub to support 25 buses and a corresponding number of fleet vehicles daily, contributing significantly to reducing carbon emissions in Aberdeen. RCE, in collaboration with Fairhurst, is currently spearheading the design phase of the project, managing various aspects from procurement to installation and commissioning. The Aberdeen City Council, alongside bp, views this initiative as a pivotal move towards advancing the adoption of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source in the city. Councillor Ian Yuill emphasized the importance of this investment in realizing Aberdeen's net zero vision and expanding the utilization of hydrogen fuel across public transport and council fleets. The project not only showcases Aberdeen's commitment to sustainability but also positions the city at the forefront of energy transition, setting a commendable example for other urban centers aiming to reduce their carbon footprint.
