Europe Unites for Trans-European Hydrogen Ecosystem
Key Ideas
- 20 European companies form H2med Southwestern Hydrogen Corridor to accelerate industrial decarbonization by early 2030s.
- Initiative aligns with Europe's targets: European Green Deal, Fit for 55, and Clean Industrial Deal.
- Members from France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain establish a single European hydrogen market to boost supply, demand, and industry competitiveness.
- Collaborative projects like HY-FEN, HySoW pipelines, and Germany's hydrogen network aim to grow Europe's hydrogen economy and support decarbonization.
A group of about 20 European companies, including steelmakers, energy firms, and hydrogen producers, have joined forces to launch the H2med Southwestern Hydrogen Corridor initiative. This initiative aims to create a trans-European hydrogen ecosystem to expedite the decarbonization of industrial sectors by the early 2030s. The endeavor is in harmony with Europe's ambitious objectives such as the European Green Deal, Fit for 55, and the Clean Industrial Deal. Key companies like Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co KGaA (SHS), thyssenkrupp nucera, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe, DH2 Energy España, and Enagás are part of this collaborative effort that brings together France, Germany, Portugal, and Spain to establish a unified hydrogen market in Europe. By integrating hydrogen production, storage, and consumption projects, the initiative aims to bolster both the supply and demand for hydrogen, thus enhancing the competitiveness of the European industry and fortifying the resilience of the energy system. Additionally, the member companies will focus on developing their respective hydrogen sectors to drive domestic decarbonization. Collaborative strategic projects such as the HY-FEN and HySoW pipelines, along with Germany's hydrogen network, are set to play pivotal roles in expanding Europe's hydrogen economy and supporting the decarbonization of hard-to-abate industries.
