Adani Group Implements Green Hydrogen Blending Initiative in Ahmedabad to Reduce Emissions and Achieve Net-Zero Goals
Key Ideas
  • Adani Group commences blending 2.2-2.3% green hydrogen into natural gas in Ahmedabad to reduce emissions and meet net-zero objectives.
  • The project aims to scale up the green hydrogen blend to 8% and extend its distribution to more areas within Ahmedabad.
  • Challenges such as hydrogen's corrosive effects and high production costs are being addressed as the initiative progresses.
  • The initiative is considered a significant step towards decarbonizing India's energy landscape and supporting sustainable development.
The Adani Group, in collaboration with TotalEnergies, has initiated a project in Ahmedabad to blend green hydrogen into natural gas supplied to consumers for cooking purposes. Starting with a blend of 2.2-2.3% green hydrogen, the project aims to increase this ratio to 8% while expanding distribution to various parts of Ahmedabad. By utilizing renewable energy sources for hydrogen production, the initiative helps in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a cleaner energy mix. Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) plans to provide hydrogen-blended natural gas to 4,000 consumers initially, with intentions to scale up the blend further. While hydrogen's corrosive nature and production costs pose challenges, the project paves the way for a cleaner, greener future and aligns with sustainability goals. CEO Suresh P Manglani emphasized the significance of this initiative in decarbonizing India's energy sector. Despite the obstacles, the initiative signifies a crucial stride in the global energy transition towards reducing emissions and combating climate change through the adoption of hydrogen energy.
