Novelis Inc., a global leader in aluminum rolling and recycling, has made a significant advancement in its production processes by successfully testing the use of hydrogen fuel at its plant in Latchford, Warrington, UK. The initiative, conducted in collaboration with Progressive Energy and part of a UK government decarbonization program, showcased the potential of hydrogen in reducing CO2e emissions by up to 90% when used in a recycling furnace. Emilio Braghi, Executive Vice President of Novelis Inc., highlighted the importance of exploring renewable energy sources like hydrogen to align with their sustainability vision. The project involved meticulous testing, including blending different percentages of hydrogen with natural gas and assessing its impact on infrastructure and equipment compatibility. This successful demonstration positions Novelis as a pioneer in adopting hydrogen at an industrial scale within the aluminum industry, with plans to further research its deployment globally. Supported by a government grant, the project forms part of the UK's efforts to transition to low carbon hydrogen through the Industrial Fuel Switching program. As a key partner in the HyNet project, Novelis is actively contributing to industrial decarbonization in the North West and North Wales regions. In parallel, Novelis is investing in expanding its recycling capacity for used beverage cans at the Latchford plant, aiming to significantly reduce CO2 emissions. The company has also set ambitious sustainability targets to achieve by 2030, including increasing recycled content and minimizing carbon emissions.
