A recent report by the Union Energy coalition in Pennsylvania offers a strategic plan for policymakers and industry leaders to shape the state's clean energy landscape. The report highlights the potential to create high-quality union jobs in transportation, industry, agriculture, and infrastructure while also tackling climate change. Rob Bair, president of the Pennsylvania Building and Construction Trades Council, emphasized the state's role as a major energy producer and its capacity to lead the clean energy transition with opportunities beyond wind and solar. Bair suggested leveraging hydrogen production, hydropower from low head dams, and geothermal power from abandoned wells. One notable recommendation is the development of high-speed rail infrastructure, which could significantly boost job creation in the Mid-Atlantic north region. Union Energy focuses on collaborating with other unions to establish apprenticeship programs that support workforce development, ensuring young individuals receive quality training while being employed. The project aims to utilize funding from acts like the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to create permanent union jobs, paving the way for the next generation of workers to enter the middle class.
