Pioneering Green Hydrogen Project in Tunisia for European Export
Key Ideas
- TE H2 and VERBUND are collaborating on the H2 Notos project in Tunisia to produce 200,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with potential scaling to one million tons.
- The project will utilize electrolyzers powered by wind and solar projects, with desalinated seawater supply, aiming for European export through pipelines.
- The SoutH2 Corridor pipeline project will connect North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany, enhancing access to the European market by 2030.
- Tunisia sees the project as a strategic move towards clean energy, attracting foreign investment in renewable energies and supporting sustainable economic development.
TotalEnergies and EREN Group's joint venture, TE H2, alongside VERBUND, have initiated a groundbreaking initiative, the H2 Notos project, in Tunisia. This project focuses on the production of green hydrogen through electrolyzers powered by onshore wind and solar projects, supplied with desalinated seawater. Initially targeting an annual production of 200,000 tons of green hydrogen, the project has the potential to scale up to one million tons per year. TE H2 and VERBUND will lead the comprehensive development, financing, construction, and operation of the project, with VERBUND managing the transportation of hydrogen to Central Europe. By leveraging the SoutH2 Corridor pipeline, connecting North Africa to key European countries, the project aims to establish a significant presence in the European market by 2030. The CEOs of TE H2 and VERBUND expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration and the transformative impact of the project on both the European industry's green hydrogen supply and Tunisia's economic growth. Tunisia's Minister of Industry also highlighted the project's importance in advancing the country's energy transition and attracting foreign investment in renewable energy sectors for sustainable development.
