In the UK, Go-Ahead, a public transport provider, is set to decarbonize its fleet with a £500 million investment over the next three years. This initiative involves the purchase of 1,200 new zero-emission buses from Northern Irish manufacturer Wrightbus. The buses will operate in various UK locations including Plymouth, Gloucestershire, East Yorkshire, London, and the Isle of Wight. This investment from Go-Ahead is expected to create 500 manufacturing jobs and an additional 2,000 jobs in the supply chain, with Wrightbus planning to establish a new production line. The UK government has introduced a broader strategy to maintain leadership in bus manufacturing and promote zero-emission transport technologies. A new UK Bus Manufacturing Expert Panel will be formed to engage industry experts and local leaders. As part of this partnership, a training and apprenticeships fund has been launched to support learning opportunities for Go-Ahead and Wrightbus employees, including students with special educational needs and those not in education or training. Wrightbus, known for producing battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell buses, also offers retrofitting services for conventional buses. In the largest order in Wrightbus' history, Go Ahead and Wrightbus will plant 10 trees for every vehicle manufactured, benefiting the towns and cities where the buses will be deployed.
