Innovative Circular Methanol and Hydrogen Plant Initiated in Italy
Key Ideas
  • MET Development, Eni, and Iren are collaborating to build a circular methanol and hydrogen plant in Italy using innovative technology.
  • The plant, based on NEXTCHEM's NX CircularTM technology, will convert non-recyclable waste into synthesis gas to produce sustainable fuels and chemicals.
  • It will have the capacity to annually produce 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen for green mobility and decarbonization purposes.
  • The project aims to reduce carbon emissions, utilize waste efficiently, and enhance environmental sustainability in the energy sector.
MET Development (MAIRE), Eni, and Iren Ambiente have embarked on the authorization process to establish a groundbreaking circular methanol and hydrogen production plant at Eni's refinery in Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, Italy. The plant, developed by MAIRE in collaboration with Eni and Iren, will utilize NEXTCHEM's NX CircularTM technology to convert non-recyclable waste into synthesis gas for sustainable fuel production. With an annual capacity of 110,000 tons of circular methanol and 1,500 tons of circular hydrogen, the plant targets green mobility and cleaner energy solutions. By leveraging this innovative technology, the project aims to effectively manage waste by generating synthesis gas that will be further processed to create environmentally friendly fuels and chemicals. The circular methanol produced will serve as an alternative for decarbonizing the maritime sector, while the circular hydrogen can be used in refinery operations or sustainable transportation modes, reducing CO2 emissions compared to traditional hydrogen sources. Apart from fuel production, the plant will recover 33,000 tons annually of inert granulate for use in the cement industry, contributing to sectoral decarbonization. The circular methanol meets the EU Renewable Energy Directive for Recycled Carbon Fuels, presenting an innovative approach to lowering carbon emissions in the energy industry. The project not only focuses on environmental sustainability but also aims to optimize costs by utilizing existing infrastructure at the refinery site. By blending economic growth with eco-friendly practices, the initiative supports the energy transition and aligns with international regulations for cleaner fuels. Fabio Fritelli, NEXTCHEM's Managing Director, highlighted the project's significance in promoting environmental responsibility while fostering economic development.
