The Government of India has introduced the 'National Hydrogen Mission' to accelerate the production and adoption of green hydrogen in the country. The mission envisions India becoming a global hub for green hydrogen production, usage, and export by 2030. With a target to produce 5 Million Metric Tonnes of Green Hydrogen annually by 2030, the initiative aims to reduce the cost of green hydrogen significantly. The budget allocations of Rs 19,744 crore will support the development of a green hydrogen ecosystem, emphasizing incentives for key sectors and infrastructure development. The mission aligns with India's goal of achieving energy independence by 2047 and Net Zero by 2070. In addition, the Green Hydrogen Policy unveiled by the Ministry of Power includes provisions to promote the production and utilization of green hydrogen and ammonia. Features like waiving transmission charges, sourcing flexibility, open access to renewable energy, and storage facilities near ports are designed to facilitate the transition to green hydrogen. These policies not only support the environmental benefits of green hydrogen but also aim to boost India's self-reliance in clean energy. The phased implementation of the mission targets sectors already using hydrogen while setting the groundwork for expansion into new segments of the economy.
