ARENA's Hydrogen Headstart: Boosting Green Energy in Western Australia
Key Ideas
- The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has allocated $814 million to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners for the Murchison Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia.
- The project aims to produce renewable hydrogen and ammonia off-grid using solar photovoltaic, onshore wind, and a battery energy storage system.
- Renewable ammonia from the project will be exported globally to support decarbonization efforts in heavy transport and shipping.
- The development of Australia's hydrogen industry has the potential to attract over $50 billion in private sector investment and create up to 16,000 new jobs by 2030.
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has announced the first recipient of its Hydrogen Headstart Program, providing $814 million in funding to Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners for the Murchison Green Hydrogen Project in Western Australia. The project by CIP involves large-scale production of renewable hydrogen and ammonia and will be located near Kalbarri. It will operate off-grid, powered by solar photovoltaic, wind energy, and a battery storage system. The facility will produce renewable ammonia for global export, especially for heavy transport and shipping decarbonization efforts. The project must meet certain development conditions before receiving the funding, which is based on production volumes over a 10-year period. Additionally, ARENA has supported 65 renewable hydrogen projects with over $370 million in funding. Furthermore, the Australian hydrogen industry could attract significant private sector investment and create thousands of new jobs by 2030, according to analysis by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment, and Water.
