Argentina's Renewable Energy Push: Transmission Projects Awarded to Key Players
Key Ideas
  • Cammesa in Argentina awarded 15 electric power projects transmission priority dispatch capacity in an auction, with 13 being renewable generation plants and the remainder grid expansion initiatives.
  • Renewables plants secured over 1GW of installed capacity, including solar PV and wind projects, with major players like Central Puerto, Genneia, and international firms like Fortescue Future Industries involved.
  • Grid expansion initiatives in provinces such as Catamarca and Santiago del Estero were approved, aiming to upgrade infrastructure and increase clean energy output, addressing transmission congestion issues.
  • Stakeholders are eagerly anticipating the government's transmission strategy details and financing proposals to further boost the deployment of new renewables along corridors with abundant wind and solar resources.
Argentina's wholesale power market administrator, Cammesa, recently awarded 15 electric power projects transmission priority dispatch capacity in an auction process for 4Q24. Among the 50 competing projects, 13 were renewable generation plants, while the other two focused on grid expansion initiatives following a 2023 rule change. The total installed capacity associated with these projects amounts to around 1GW. The generation plants, comprising seven solar PV and six wind projects, secured a combined 152MW of standard priority dispatch capacity known as Mater Pleno, along with 583MW of priority dispatch capacity known as Reference A. The winning projects featured major industry players like Central Puerto, Genneia, Fortescue Future Industries, and Capex, indicating a strong commitment to clean energy ventures. Grid expansion projects in provinces such as Catamarca and Santiago del Estero were greenlit, with works including capacitor replacement and focusing on relieving transmission congestion to facilitate new renewables capacity deployment. Stakeholders are eagerly awaiting the government's forthcoming transmission strategy and financing proposals to further drive the country's transition to cleaner energy sources.
