EnBW to Market 100,000 MT of Green Ammonia from SkiGA Project in Norway
Key Ideas
  • EnBW is set to market 100,000 MT of green ammonia from the Skipavika Green Ammonia project in western Norway starting in 2027.
  • The Skipavika Green Ammonia project, a joint venture between Fuella and Skipavika Innovation, aims to produce emission-free green ammonia using local green electricity.
  • EnBW's cooperation with Fuella includes a 10% equity stake, securing exclusive rights to a long-term offtake agreement for the green ammonia.
  • The project is supported by the European Hydrogen Bank and aligns with Norway's plans to develop 30 GW of offshore wind by 2040.
Energie Baden-Württemberg (EnBW) has announced its plans to market 100,000 metric tonnes of green ammonia from the Skipavika Green Ammonia (SkiGA) project in western Norway, with volumes expected to be available from 2027. SkiGA, a partnership between Fuella and Skipavika Innovation, is committed to producing emission-free green ammonia by utilizing local green electricity. The project's electrolyser with an output of 130 megawatts is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions by approximately 240,000 MT compared to conventional gray ammonia production. EnBW's collaboration with Fuella, initiated in 2023 with a 10% equity stake, not only supports the investment decision but also secures exclusive rights to a long-term offtake agreement for the green ammonia. Furthermore, SkiGA was among the recipients of funding in the first auction of the European Hydrogen Bank, highlighting its significance in the hydrogen economy. Peter Heydecker, Board Member for Sustainable Generation Infrastructure at EnBW, expressed optimism about the market ramp-up with the secured green ammonia volumes, emphasizing the company's commitment to a carbon-free energy supply. This development aligns with Norway's ambitious goal of developing 30 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2040, showcasing a holistic approach towards renewable energy and emissions reduction.
