GAIL (India) Inaugurates First Green Hydrogen Plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh
Key Ideas
  • GAIL (India) has launched its first green hydrogen plant in Vijaipur, Madhya Pradesh, marking a significant leap into renewable energy.
  • The 10-MW PEM electrolyser from Canada can produce 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen daily with exceptional purity, initially for captive use and later for retail customers.
  • The company plans to blend hydrogen with natural gas, with current tests in Indore, aiming to increase blending ratios post necessary approvals, supported by joint studies.
  • To support the green hydrogen production, GAIL is also establishing 20 MW solar power plants at Vijaipur, combining ground-mounted and floating installations.
GAIL (India) has taken a major stride into the realm of renewable energy by unveiling its inaugural green hydrogen plant at Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh. The plant, equipped with a 10-MW proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser sourced from Canada, has the capacity to generate approximately 4.3 tonnes of green hydrogen daily, ensuring an exceptional purity level of about 99.999 percent by volume. Initially, the produced hydrogen will be utilized alongside natural gas for internal purposes across different processes and equipment within the existing facility. Moreover, the green hydrogen is slated to be distributed to retail customers in nearby regions, facilitated by transportation through high-pressure cascades. In tandem with this development, GAIL is also in the process of erecting 20 MW solar power plants at Vijaipur, employing both ground-mounted and floating configurations to cater to the energy demands of the PEM Electrolyser. The company's initiative extends to blending hydrogen with natural gas, an endeavor currently undergoing trials in Indore's city gas distribution network. Through collaborative efforts with Engineers India and IIT Kanpur, GAIL aims to enhance blending ratios beyond the current permissible limit of five percent, subject to regulatory approvals and supported by joint research activities.
