- The project is at the world's highest altitude for green hydrogen mobility, mitigating carbon emissions and contributing pure oxygen into the atmosphere, while NTPC plans more hydrogen mobility projects and a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.
Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar inaugurated NTPC's Green Hydrogen Mobility Project in Leh, India. The project features a hydrogen-fuelling station, a 1.7 MW solar plant, and five fuel cell buses operating at an altitude of 11,562 feet. This initiative marks India's first hydrogen bus deployment on public roads. NTPC aims to achieve 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032 and lead in green hydrogen and energy storage. The project includes a green hydrogen filling station with a capacity of 80 kg/day, five hydrogen intra-city buses, and a 1.7 MW solar plant. Each bus can cover 300 km per single filling of hydrogen. Notably, this project operates at the world's highest altitude for green hydrogen mobility at 3,650 meters above sea level, designed to function in low density air and sub-zero temperatures. The hydrogen station is capable of filling hydrogen at 350 bar pressure, mitigating around 350 metric tons of carbon emissions per year and contributing 230 metric tons per year of pure oxygen into the atmosphere. NTPC plans to set up more hydrogen mobility projects across India and deploy various green hydrogen technologies, along with rapidly scaling up renewable energy capacity. Additionally, they are establishing a hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh. The positive impact of this project includes environmental benefits such as reducing carbon emissions and providing oxygen, equivalent to planting about 13,000 trees. The Union minister also visited a waste-to-art sculptures site at Leh during the event.
