Norwegian company Hoegh Evi, in collaboration with Finnish firm Wartsila Gas Solutions, has introduced a groundbreaking development in the form of the world's first floating ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker. This innovative technology allows floating import terminals to produce hydrogen at significant volumes from transported ammonia. The project, announced in April 2023, is part of Norway's green platform programme and has received substantial funding support, including 5.9 million euros from the Norwegian government. The ammonia cracker, with a modular design, offers a sendout capacity of up to 210,000 tonnes of hydrogen annually and can be integrated into various floating infrastructure setups. Partners in the project include the Institute for Energy Technology, University of South-East Norway, Sustainable Energy, and BASF. Hoegh Evi is actively involved in multiple hydrogen terminal initiatives in Europe to meet the growing demand, with plans to start operations before 2030. These initiatives include collaborations with SEFE in Germany and agreements with French and German port operators for floating hydrogen import terminals. Hoegh Evi's focus on green energy solutions is evident in its fleet of FSRUs and LNG carriers, showcasing a commitment to sustainable energy practices.
