Governor Kathy Hochul of New York has announced over $5 million in funding for Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) projects through the state's Renewable Optimization and Energy Storage Innovation Program. The funding is intended to facilitate the development and demonstration of scalable innovative LDES solutions that can connect and provide stored renewable energy to the state's electric grid, thereby reducing harmful emissions associated with the use of fossil fuels. This initiative aligns with the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (Climate Act) goal of installing 3,000 MW of energy storage by 2030 and aims to facilitate development up to 6,000 MW. The funding, administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), is part of a competitive solicitation for projects that support innovative and under-utilized LDES solutions, devices, software, controls, and complementary technologies that are not yet commercialized. Proposals are expected to focus on product development and demonstration projects in energy storage that last from 10 to over 100 hours in duration at rated power, addressing challenges such as grid congestion and lithium-ion siting limitations in New York City. The projects selected through this initiative will support the development of LDES solutions coupled with renewable energy generation in disadvantaged communities, leading to reduced emissions, improved health outcomes, and minimized climate-related impacts and grid constraints.
