Horisont Energi, a Norwegian clean energy company, has signed a non-binding term sheet with a European energy group for ammonia sales from its Barents Blue clean ammonia plant in northern Norway. This agreement is crucial for achieving the concept select milestone for the Barents Blue project. The plant, located in Markoppnes, is set to be a clean ammonia facility with an annual production capacity of 1 million tonnes. It boasts a carbon capture rate above 99%, making it a leader in energy efficiency within its sector. The project, part of the EU IPCEI Hydrogen initiative, has progressed technically and logistically, securing power supply for its initial phase. As the project advances towards the concept select milestone and the first FEED study phase, the focus is on finalizing commercial agreements for gas supply, clean ammonia offtake, and CO2 storage. The ultimate goal is to make the Barents Blue plant the most energy-efficient clean ammonia production facility globally. The final investment decision for the Barents Blue project is expected to be made in 2026, with production slated to commence in 2029 or 2030. This development signifies a positive step towards sustainable and renewable energy production in Norway, highlighting the commitment of Horisont Energi to clean fuel technologies and reducing carbon emissions.
