The Odisha government took a significant step towards promoting eco-friendly transport by signing a tripartite agreement to introduce green hydrogen buses in Bhubaneswar. The agreement, signed among NTPC, GRIDCO, and CRUT in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo and other officials, aims to implement innovative green energy technologies in the state, focusing on revolutionizing the public transport system. With a vision to move towards a net-zero carbon footprint, this initiative reflects the commitment to adopting sustainable practices. NTPC will be responsible for hydrogen production, while GRIDCO will ensure a renewable energy supply to power the buses. CRUT will manage the operations of these hydrogen-powered buses in Bhubaneswar. The MoU, effective for five years, signifies a long-term commitment to sustainable transportation. This initiative falls under the Scheme Guidelines for Implementation of Pilot Projects for the use of Green Hydrogen in the Transport Sector issued by the MNRE. The pilot project, supported by an investment of `19.5 crore from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), will play a crucial role in transitioning from fossil fuel-based buses to eco-friendly hydrogen-powered buses, contributing to a greener and cleaner environment.
