Repurposing Offshore Pipelines for Hydrogen Transport in the Netherlands
Key Ideas
- Gasunie and Petrogas Transportation are collaborating to assess the feasibility of repurposing offshore pipelines for hydrogen transport in the Netherlands.
- Demo 1, an offshore hydrogen project supported by the Dutch Government, aims to convert excess wind energy into hydrogen to reduce infrastructure costs.
- The reused pipeline project is part of Gasunie's plans for a Dutch hydrogen network that will connect key regions in the country by 2033.
- Although Gasunie faces challenges in permitting and personnel, the initiative signifies a positive step towards integrating hydrogen into the energy transition.
Gasunie and Petrogas Transportation are working together in the Netherlands to explore repurposing offshore pipelines for hydrogen transport. Gasunie, in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Climate and Green Growth, is evaluating the technical, legal, economic, and environmental aspects of using existing offshore pipelines for hydrogen. On the other hand, Petrogas will investigate the potential to repurpose its current infrastructure for hydrogen transportation. The focus is on reusing a natural gas pipeline, possibly linking it to Demo 1, an initiative by the Dutch Government to produce hydrogen from excess wind energy at sea. This process aims to decrease reliance on power cables and reduce infrastructure costs. The plan includes transporting the produced hydrogen through the repurposed pipeline. This project aligns with Gasunie's larger vision of establishing a Dutch hydrogen network that will interconnect various regions including Rotterdam, Zeeland, the North Netherlands, the North Sea Canal Area, Chemelot, and the Delta Rhine Corridor. Despite the construction of the first section in Rotterdam already underway and scheduled for completion in 2026, Gasunie has extended the network's overall completion timeline to 2033. This delay is primarily due to challenges with permitting and personnel. However, this project showcases a positive advancement in integrating hydrogen into the country's energy transition and promoting renewable energy initiatives.
