Transforming America's Heartland and Mid-Atlantic with Clean Hydrogen Hubs
Key Ideas
  • The Heartland Hydrogen Hub in the American Heartland aims to produce clean hydrogen for low-carbon nitrogen fertilizer, reducing emissions by 525,000 metric tons yearly.
  • The Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub focuses on developing hydrogen production facilities using innovative technologies for industrial applications, with an expected reduction of 1 million metric tons of carbon emissions annually.
  • Both projects receive funding from OCED to kickstart Phase 1 activities involving planning, design, and community engagement to establish critical energy infrastructure.
  • The initiatives aim to lower costs for farmers, contribute to cleaner industrial processes and transportation, and support the reduction of CO2 emissions equivalent to hundreds of thousands of gasoline-powered cars.
The OCED has awarded grants to establish two regional clean hydrogen hubs in America's Heartland and the Mid-Atlantic region. The Heartland Hydrogen Hub, spearheaded by the University of North Dakota Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC), aims to leverage energy resources in the Heartland to produce clean hydrogen for low-carbon nitrogen fertilizer. This initiative could significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 525,000 metric tons annually. Similarly, the Mid-Atlantic Hydrogen Hub, led by Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub, Inc. (MACH2), plans to develop hydrogen production facilities using innovative electrolyzer technologies to reduce costs and drive technology adoption. The clean hydrogen produced will be utilized in various industrial applications and transportation sectors, contributing to the reduction of approximately 1 million metric tons of carbon emissions per year. Both projects focus on initial planning, design, and community engagement activities to establish critical energy infrastructure. By lowering costs for farmers, promoting cleaner industrial processes, and supporting the reduction of carbon emissions equivalent to hundreds of thousands of gasoline-powered cars, these initiatives hold the potential to transform the energy landscape in these regions.
