ZEFES Symposium: Advancing Decarbonisation in Long-Haul Transport with Electric and Hydrogen Trucks
Key Ideas
- ZEFES project, supported by IRU and partners, aims to showcase real-world applications of electric and hydrogen trucks for decarbonising long-haul freight operations in the EU.
- Key discussions at the symposium covered challenges such as weights and dimensions, standardisation across countries, and the need for infrastructure for widespread adoption of electric vehicles.
- Focus areas included operational efficiency, road safety, infrastructure development, and business aspects to support the use of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles in logistics supply chains.
- IRU and its members are actively working on supporting the mass roll-out of zero-emission vehicles, with plans to continue discussions at the next stakeholder symposium in 2025.
The second annual ZEFES Stakeholder Symposium, hosted in Gothenburg, Sweden by Volvo Trucks, brought together partners and stakeholders of the EU-funded ZEFES project. This initiative, aimed at decarbonising long-haul freight, focuses on showcasing real-world applications of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) across the EU. IRU, playing a pivotal role, is committed to exploring options for transport decarbonisation.
During the symposium, discussions revolved around challenges like weights and dimensions, the standardisation of vehicles across countries, and the infrastructure required for the widespread adoption of zero-emission trucks. The symposium featured presentations on operational efficiency, road safety, combined transport, intermodal transport, and infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of addressing these aspects for successful decarbonisation.
Key stakeholders, including the European Commission, road infrastructure managers, manufacturers, and operators, participated in panel discussions focusing on the upcoming revision of the EU Weights and Dimensions Directive and the charging infrastructure needed for BEVs and FCEVs. The event also delved into business and operational aspects of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles.
ZEFES aims to make long-haul BEVs and FCEVs reliable options for goods transport operations by mapping recharging/refuelling points, exploring new charging concepts, and creating fleet management tools. IRU and its members are actively involved in identifying requirements for mass zero-emission vehicle deployment and supporting the vehicle type-approval process.
The positive sentiment at the symposium culminated in future plans for the third stakeholder symposium in October 2025, where further advancements in decarbonisation strategies for long-haul transport using electric and hydrogen trucks will be discussed.
