DP World's Successful Test of Hydrogen-Powered Crane in Vancouver
Key Ideas
  • DP World successfully tested a hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tired gantry crane at the Port of Vancouver, a significant step in decarbonizing port operations.
  • The adoption of hydrogen technology in RTG cranes aims to reduce or eliminate the significant greenhouse gas emissions associated with diesel-powered cranes.
  • Real-world testing of the hydrogen-electric RTG will compare it to traditional diesel-powered RTGs in terms of productivity, costs, and environmental benefits.
  • The project, in collaboration with TYCROP, H2 Portable, and HTEC, showcases the success of industry-government partnerships in driving innovation for cleaner energy solutions.
DP World has completed initial testing of a hydrogen fuel cell rubber-tired gantry (RTG) crane at the Port of Vancouver, as part of its efforts to decarbonize its port operations. Traditionally powered by diesel, RTG cranes contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. The pilot project involved retrofitting a diesel RTG with a Hydrogen-Electric Generator (HEG) and other integrated systems. The crane is now in a one-year field trial to assess its performance parameters, including hydrogen consumption and energy generation rates. If successful, DP World plans to convert more RTG cranes to hydrogen power to meet its zero-emission objectives. The project has received support from various companies, including TYCROP, H2 Portable, and HTEC. The hydrogen-powered RTG crane stores hydrogen in pressurized tanks, which charges a high-voltage battery to power the crane's electric drive. The successful testing of the system highlights the potential for hydrogen-based technology to deliver performance benefits and drive the transition to cleaner energy solutions in the industry.
