- Geely's long-term R&D in methanol as a fuel has led to almost 40,000 methanol-powered vehicles globally, emphasizing the creation of a green methanol ecosystem to enhance productivity in Liaoning province.
- The partnership between Shenyang Jinbei and Geely signifies a positive step towards sustainable transportation solutions and increasing the market share of NEVs in regions with harsh winter conditions.
Chinese automaker Shenyang Jinbei Automotive Company Ltd has initiated the production of two new energy vehicle (NEV) models, Jiyun E6 and Jiyun E9, in collaboration with Geely Holding Group's Farizon Auto in Shenyang, China. These commercial vans are the first models resulting from this collaboration, with plans to introduce methanol-hydrogen hybrid electric vehicles in 2025 to promote NEV adoption in colder regions of China. The companies aim to address the issue of reduced battery efficiency and limited range in freezing winter temperatures, which has hindered NEV penetration in northern China, currently below 2% in 2023.
Geely's chairman, Li Shufu, highlighted the joint effort to establish a green methanol ecosystem, emphasizing increased productivity in Liaoning province. Geely's extensive two-decade research and development in methanol as a fuel has led to the operation of nearly 40,000 methanol-powered vehicles globally. The launch of the first methanol refueling station in Shenyang and plans for 40 more by 2026 mark the foundation of a robust methanol-hydrogen ecosystem.
The collaboration between Shenyang Jinbei and Geely aims to provide sustainable transportation solutions and enhance the market share of NEVs in regions with harsh winter climates, demonstrating a positive step towards environmental-friendly mobility options and infrastructure development.
