European Companies to Produce Renewable Ammonia in Morocco's Green Hydrogen Project
Key Ideas
- Three European companies have been selected for the first land allocation under the 'Moroccan Offer' to produce 200,000 t/yr of renewable ammonia for the European market.
- The Chbika project in Morocco will use 1GW of combined solar photovoltaic and wind power for electrolysis to produce hydrogen, then converted into ammonia.
- The project aims to create a world-scale green hydrogen production hub and involves partners overseeing power generation assets, hydrogen and ammonia plants, and logistics infrastructure.
- The Moroccan Offer plans to make 300,000 hectares of government land available for 10-30 projects, with the first selections to be announced soon by the Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy.
Three European companies, TE H2 from France (a joint venture between TotalEnergies and Eren), Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) from Denmark, and A P Moller, have been selected for the first land allocation under the 'Moroccan Offer'. The companies plan to produce 200,000 t/yr of renewable ammonia for the European market in the first phase of the project. The Chbika project, located in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region on Morocco's Atlantic coast, will utilize 1GW of solar photovoltaic and wind power for electrolysis of desalinated seawater to generate hydrogen, which will then be converted into ammonia. The project aims to create a world-scale green hydrogen production hub, with the partners overseeing the development of power generation assets, hydrogen and ammonia plants, and logistics infrastructure. The companies have signed a preliminary contract for land reservation with the government as part of the Moroccan Offer, which seeks to allocate land rights to project developers and streamline permitting procedures. The Moroccan Agency for Solar Energy is planning to make 300,000 hectares of government land available to 10-30 projects, with around 40 applications already received for review. This initiative is expected to boost the development of renewable hydrogen and ammonia projects in Morocco, taking advantage of favorable renewable power conditions.
