The Sarawak state legislative assembly in Malaysia has made significant progress by passing the Gas Distribution Bill (Amendment) 2024. This bill introduces a legal framework to regulate hydrogen distribution in Sarawak, expanding the definition of 'gas' to include hydrogen. The decision, reached unanimously, follows a debate session involving 22 assemblymen. The amendment incorporates new provisions under Part IVA of the Gas Distribution Ordinance to specifically regulate hydrogen-related activities such as generation, storage, and distribution. Offences related to unlicensed hydrogen activities will now face penalties ranging from fines to imprisonment, with repeated non-compliance potentially incurring penalties up to ten times the initial fine, including a financial penalty of up to RM20 million. Sarawak Utilities and Telecommunications Minister Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi highlighted that this amendment is crucial for supporting Sarawak's clean energy transition. By strengthening the legal framework, the state aims to facilitate the development, generation, and distribution of hydrogen, positioning Sarawak at the forefront of the green energy sector.
