Under the presidency of King Mohammed VI of Morocco and President Emmanuel Macron of France, the government of Morocco and TE H2, along with partners TotalEnergies, EREN Group, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), and A.P. Møller Capital, signed a Preliminary Contract for Land Reservation for the 'Chbika' project. The initiative, located in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region near Morocco's Atlantic coast, aims to establish 1 GW of onshore solar and wind capacities to power the production of green hydrogen through desalinated seawater electrolysis and transform it into 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually for the European market. This project signifies the initial phase of developing a world-scale green hydrogen production hub. TE H2 and CIP will oversee renewable energy production, while A.P. Møller Capital will focus on port and infrastructure development.
The contract underscores Morocco's renewable potential, showcasing its contributions to economic development. TotalEnergies Chairman Patrick Pouyanné highlighted Morocco's competitive renewable resources and the country's role in supporting Europe's Green Deal goals. TE H2 CEO David Corchia emphasized the project's commitment to green hydrogen initiatives for energy transition and industrial development in Morocco. The partnership aims to provide affordable and clean energy to Europe while boosting Morocco's decarbonized industrial growth. CIP partner Philip Christiani praised Morocco's position in the global energy transition and expressed pride in contributing to the country's net zero ambitions.
A.P. Møller Capital CEO Kim Fejfer acknowledged the significance of developing the green hydrogen industry in Morocco and highlighted the importance of competitive transport infrastructure within green hydrogen value chains. TE H2, an 80/20 joint venture between TotalEnergies and EREN Groupe, is dedicated to structuring large-scale green hydrogen projects in regions like North Africa, Latin America, and Australia. With a focus on delivering impactful renewable energy projects globally, TE H2 aims to provide accessible and sustainable energy solutions to a broad audience.
