Assam Petrochemicals Ltd. has signed a memorandum of understanding with Gurgaon-based FC TecNrgy to collaborate on producing high-grade methanol tailored for India's fuel cell market. This partnership aims to refine methanol to 99.95% purity, which is ideal for the fuel cell market and contributes to reducing fossil fuel consumption in India. The companies plan to work together to achieve a production level of 50-75 lakh litres of high-grade methanol over the next five years and explore opportunities for joint marketing and potential export. The initiative is seen as beneficial for both companies, as it capitalizes on the growing demand for methanol fuel cells, driven by India's climate commitments and carbon reduction goals. The ceremony where the memorandum was signed was attended by Niti Aayog vice chairman Suman Bery, emphasizing the importance of the partnership in the context of India's energy transition towards cleaner alternatives. Methanol production involves the direct combination of carbon monoxide gas and hydrogen with a catalyst, or using syngas derived from biomass. Methanol serves as an alternative fuel in various sectors, including transportation and power generation, showcasing its versatility and potential in reducing carbon emissions.
