European Commission Invests €4.8 Billion in Net Zero Projects
Key Ideas
- The European Commission allocated €4.8 billion from emissions trading revenues to fund 85 innovative net zero projects, raising the total investment to €12 billion.
- The projects focus on cleantech manufacturing, renewable energy, and net-zero mobility including maritime and aviation sectors.
- Selected projects will contribute to producing 61 kilotonnes per year of renewable fuel of non-biological origin and aim to reduce emissions by about 476 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in their first ten years of operation.
- Initiatives like the H2ydroShuttle project in the Netherlands and the decarbonization platform for passenger ships in Italy are among those receiving funding to advance sustainable transport solutions.
The European Commission has pledged €4.8 billion from emissions trading revenues to support 85 innovative net zero projects, bringing the total investment from its Innovation Fund to €12 billion. These projects, spanning various sectors such as cleantech manufacturing, renewable energy, and net-zero mobility including maritime and aviation, will be located in 18 countries across Europe. The selected initiatives aim to deliver 61 kilotonnes per year of renewable fuel of non-biological origin and contribute to improving the use of renewable energy, particularly hydrogen, in hard-to-abate applications in the transport and industrial sectors. Key focus areas include developing vessels for renewable fuel and electricity use in the maritime sector, reducing emissions in road transport component manufacturing, and supporting the production of sustainable transport fuels. Notable projects include the H2ydroShuttle project in the Netherlands, which targets zero emission container service powered by hydrogen fuel cells, and the Indigo project in Italy focusing on hybrid decarbonization for passenger ships. Additionally, the fund will invest in projects like Cormorant in Norway to develop electric motors for maritime transport. The Commission anticipates that these projects will collectively reduce emissions by approximately 476 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over their first decade of operation. The support for such initiatives aligns with the goal of achieving clean mobility and sustainable aviation. Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra emphasized the importance of these projects in accelerating efforts towards cleaner transportation.
