Iwatani Corp. has successfully built a hydrogen-powered boat named Mahoroba for the upcoming 2025 Osaka Kansai Expo in Japan. This boat, the first of its kind in the country, will operate commercially during the Expo, providing transportation for visitors from Nakanoshima to the expo venue on Yumeshima island. The vessel, 33 meters long and 8 meters wide, has a passenger capacity of 150. Utilizing hydrogen fuel cells to power its motors, the boat offers a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional gasoline-powered boats. The hydrogen fuel cells generate electricity through a reaction between hydrogen and oxygen, ensuring that the boat operates without emitting carbon dioxide. Additionally, the Mahoroba generates minimal noise, odor, and vibration, enhancing the passenger experience. The boat's launch in Osaka follows its construction in Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, and a ceremonial event held in May. The operational responsibilities for the vessel during the Expo have been entrusted to Osaka Aqua Bus ltd., a subsidiary of Keihan Holdings Co. The name Mahoroba, an old Japanese term signifying 'a comfortable place to live,' reflects Iwatani Corp.'s vision for a harmonious coexistence with nature, hoping for a more comfortable world to live in through sustainable practices.
