ZeroAvia Chosen for AFWERX Grant to Explore Hydrogen Propulsion in Cessna Caravan Aircraft
Key Ideas
  • ZeroAvia selected by AFWERX for SBIR grant to study integrating hydrogen propulsion into Cessna Caravan aircraft with advanced automation technology.
  • Hydrogen technology aims to reduce engine noise, thermal signature, and enhance the range, duration, and turnaround time of electric UAVs.
  • The study explores benefits of hydrogen fuel cells for aviation, including simplified fuel logistics and potential maximum range of over 2,000 nm.
  • ZeroAvia, with support from Reliable Robotics, aims to strengthen U.S. national defense through innovative hydrogen-electric propulsion in autonomous aircraft.
ZeroAvia has been chosen by AFWERX for a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant to conduct a feasibility study on integrating hydrogen propulsion into Cessna Caravan aircraft alongside advanced aircraft automation technology. The focus is on developing an 8,000 lb autonomous aircraft with hydrogen-electric propulsion to reduce engine noise, thermal signature, and improve the capabilities of electric Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). The advantages of hydrogen as an aviation fuel are highlighted, such as simplified fuel logistics and the high energy density per unit of weight for extended range. The study also involves exploring autonomous flight systems with the support of Reliable Robotics. ZeroAvia is progressing certification for a 600kW hydrogen-electric powertrain (ZA600) and has achieved a regulatory milestone with the FAA for its electric propulsion system. Val Miftakhov, Founder and CEO of ZeroAvia, expressed the importance of the U.S. Air Force's interest in hydrogen fuel cells and electric propulsion for unmanned aircraft. The feasibility study aims to provide insights into cost reduction, enhanced capabilities, and improved fuel supply in challenging environments. The initiative underscores a commitment to innovation and national defense.
