Adani Group Begins Blending Green Hydrogen in Natural Gas for Cleaner Energy
Key Ideas
- Adani Group has started blending green hydrogen with natural gas in Ahmedabad to lower emissions and meet net-zero targets.
- The project aims to provide hydrogen-blended natural gas to 4,000 domestic and commercial consumers in the area.
- The company plans to gradually increase the green hydrogen blend to 5% and then to 8% to widen supplies in other parts of Ahmedabad and beyond.
- The initiative is a significant step towards decarbonizing India's energy landscape and supporting cleaner, greener energy solutions.
Adani Group has initiated the blending of green hydrogen in natural gas supplied for cooking in parts of Ahmedabad to reduce emissions and achieve net-zero goals. Adani Total Gas Ltd, in partnership with TotalEnergies, is introducing 2.2-2.3% green hydrogen in piped natural gas in Shantigram, Ahmedabad. This green hydrogen is produced using renewable sources like wind or solar power through electrolysis. The firm aims to provide hydrogen-blended natural gas to 4,000 consumers and plans to gradually increase the blend to 8% in the future. Other initiatives in India include NTPC supplying green hydrogen blended natural gas in Surat and GAIL (India) Ltd conducting a pilot in Indore. The project is viewed positively as a step towards reducing carbon footprint, enhancing energy security, and supporting sustainable development. Although challenges like the cost of production exist, hydrogen energy is recognized as crucial in the global energy transition to combat climate change.
