MOL Group has initiated green hydrogen production at its Hungarian refinery in Százhalombatta, replacing a portion of grey hydrogen usage and significantly reducing carbon emissions. The 10MW plant, powered by Plug Power electrolyser technology and renewable energy sources, is expected to produce 1,600 tonnes of green hydrogen annually. This move aligns with MOL's sustainability goals, aiming to cut more than 25,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year at the Budapest refinery. Adam Horvath, MOL's Vice-President of New and Sustainable Businesses, highlighted the €22 million investment in the plant as a crucial step towards enhancing green technology in the region. The successful operation of the electrolyser system without external subsidies underscores MOL's commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. Furthermore, MOL Group plans to replicate its green hydrogen success by establishing similar plants in Bratislava and Rijeka, emphasizing a broader strategy of transitioning towards cleaner energy production. The upcoming plant in Rijeka, Croatia, in collaboration with INA, will utilize a 10MW PEM electrolyser system from Ohmium, indicating a growing trend towards green hydrogen adoption in the European market.
