Rolleston Company Launches Zero-Emission Hydrogen Fuel Cell Trucks in New Zealand
Key Ideas
  • TR Group in Rolleston launches the first of 20 hydrogen fuel cell trucks to reduce transport emissions under a government-backed initiative with Hiringa Energy.
  • The trucks have already proven successful, with one running for about two years and covering close to 200,000km with New Zealand Post.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell trucks produce only pure water emissions, targeting the high-emission heavy transport sector and are supported by hydrogen fuelling stations across New Zealand.
  • Despite initial expenses, the company aims to scale up the technology to reduce costs and make hydrogen-powered transportation more accessible.
TR Group, based in Rolleston, New Zealand, is launching a fleet of 20 hydrogen fuel cell trucks in collaboration with Hiringa Energy to combat transport emissions. These trucks, already proven successful with one operating for two years and covering 200,000km with New Zealand Post, emit only pure water, contributing to sustainability. The initiative aims to target high-emission heavy transport vehicles, which make up a significant portion of transport emissions. The company plans to base the trucks in Hampton Downs and Christchurch, with Global Bus Ventures contributing a six-by-four tractor unit. Hydrogen fuelling stations in South Auckland, Hamilton, and Palmerston North support the trucks, with a fourth station under construction in Tauranga. While acknowledging initial expenses, TR Group believes that scaling up the technology will lead to cost reductions, making hydrogen-powered transportation more cost-effective and widely available.
