Air New Zealand and aviation finance firm Avolon have entered into a partnership to explore the use of electric and hydrogen aircraft, signing a letter of intent for the sale and lease back of an electric cargo aircraft from Beta Technologies. The deal also includes a memorandum of understanding for research collaboration on commercializing electric aircraft, battery hybrid, and hydrogen technologies. The Beta Alia CX300 electric cargo aircraft, capable of carrying up to 0.56 tonnes of cargo, is scheduled for delivery in 2026. It will be utilized by Air New Zealand to transport cargo between Wellington and Blenheim in partnership with New Zealand Post. The collaboration between Avolon and Air New Zealand reflects their joint commitment to supporting clean tech aircraft development, contributing to decarbonizing air travel, and aligning with the aviation sector's net zero emissions goal for 2050. The partnership underlines the crucial role lessors play in facilitating the commercialization of clean tech aircraft. The initiative is a part of Air New Zealand's Mission Next Gen Aircraft program, aimed at launching commercial flights using next-generation aircraft by 2026, with Beta's ALIA being the initial commercial order. The focus on innovation and sustainability in aviation is evident through this partnership, which aims to drive the adoption of green technologies in the industry.
