EET and SSE Collaborate on Gowy Green Hydrogen Project in Northwest England
Key Ideas
  • EET and SSE are partnering to build a 40 MW green hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, named Gowy Green Hydrogen.
  • The project aims to deliver hydrogen to industrial offtakers in the region to support decarbonization efforts, potentially operational by 2028.
  • The UK's focus on low-carbon hydrogen aligns with the project, with a target to deliver 10 GW by 2030, contributing to decarbonizing hard-to-abate industries.
  • Both companies express enthusiasm for the collaboration, highlighting the importance of scaling up green hydrogen production to achieve net zero goals and decarbonize industries.
Essar Energy Transition (EET) and UK gas-fired power generator SSE have joined forces to establish a 40 MW green hydrogen project at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. This project, named Gowy Green Hydrogen after the River Gowy and nearby nature reserve, aims to provide hydrogen to industrial users in the region to assist in their decarbonization efforts, ultimately aiding in job preservation and growth. Feasibility studies are underway, with operational readiness anticipated as early as 2028. The UK's commitment to low-carbon hydrogen, with a target of 10 GW by 2030, underpins the significance of this initiative in fostering a cleaner power system and enabling challenging industries to reduce carbon emissions. EET's CEO, Joe Seifert, and SSE's Director of Business Development, Hannah Bronwin, express optimism about the project's potential to contribute to sustainable energy practices and industry decarbonization in the region. SSE's broader involvement in hydrogen projects across various stages of the value chain reflects a holistic approach towards achieving net zero emissions.
