FAA Grants of $291 Million to Reduce Aviation Emissions in the US
Key Ideas
  • The Biden-Harris Administration, through the FAA, has allocated $291 million in grants to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector.
  • Funding under the FAST program will support projects focused on sustainable aviation fuel production, transportation, and low-emission aviation technologies.
  • Key projects include Gevo, Inc. converting a Minnesota facility for SAF production and JetZero, Inc. developing fuel-efficient airplane technologies.
  • The grants will be distributed across 23 states to various recipients like fuel producers, logistics companies, and universities, fostering a diverse approach to emission reduction.
The Biden-Harris Administration, in collaboration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), has announced the allocation of $291 million in grants aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the aviation sector. This initiative, part of the broader Investing in America Agenda, supports the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero aviation emissions by 2050. The funding, provided through the Fueling Aviation's Sustainable Transition (FAST) program, will focus on supporting projects related to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production, transportation, and low-emission aviation technologies. A significant portion of the funding, $244.5 million, will be directed towards 22 projects that aim to expand SAF production, improve supply chains, and make SAF more accessible. Additionally, $46.5 million will support 14 projects developing low-emission aviation technologies to enhance fuel efficiency and increase SAF usage. Key projects that will benefit from these grants include Gevo, Inc. receiving $16.8 million to convert a Minnesota fuel facility for SAF production, a $240,000 study on SAF deployment at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and $8 million granted to JetZero, Inc. for the development of fuel-efficient aeroplane technologies. The grants will have a wide reach, being distributed across 23 states and benefiting a diverse group of recipients such as fuel producers, logistics companies, aircraft manufacturers, and universities. This holistic approach aims to accelerate the decarbonization of the aviation industry in alignment with the US Aviation Climate Action Plan. Overall, this funding signifies a significant step towards reducing emissions and promoting sustainability in the aviation sector.
