Academics in Scotland are exploring the use of e-planes to enhance travel options for people living in remote parts of the Highlands and Islands. Test flights of electric powered planes, cargo drones, and hybrid aircraft have already taken place to and from Orkney, showcasing the region's potential for sustainable aviation. Kirkwall Airport in Orkney serves as the UK's first low-carbon aviation test center, focusing on improving rural connectivity and exploring new economic opportunities. The Sustainable Aviation Test Environment (SATE) partnership, led by the University of the Highlands and Islands, aims to assess the feasibility of electric aeroplane transport for scheduled airline routes, offshore energy services, healthcare, and environmental surveys. Various companies like Ampaire and Windracers are actively involved in testing hybrid-electric aircraft and autonomous drone aircraft as part of the project. The goal is to demonstrate the benefits of sustainable aviation technology in challenging environments and promote the transition towards low-carbon aviation solutions.
