The Northern Territory Government has initiated a project in collaboration with UAV firm Blueflite, Charles Darwin University (CDU), and H3 Dynamics to investigate the development of hydrogen storage tanks for drones. This $1.79 million project aims to create a lightweight, high-pressure hydrogen vessel using Advanced Fiber Placement (AFP) technology specifically for hydrogen-powered UAVs. The Advanced Manufacturing Ecosystem Fund has contributed $275,000 towards this innovative endeavor. The project will involve trials for remote site hydrogen generation, filling of the new tanks, and subsequent test flights at the Darwin UAV test range. Blueflite anticipates significant returns, expecting $9.6 million in additional revenue and the creation of 17 new skilled jobs in Darwin within five years. CEO Frank Noppel highlighted the transformative potential of UAVs in shrinking distances, enhancing services in remote areas, and contributing to decarbonization efforts. The collaboration aims to establish a unique composite hydrogen tank manufacturing capability in Australia and position the Northern Territory as a leader in sustainable aviation and manufacturing. With the growth projections for drone use in Australia, this partnership seeks to address the increasing demand for drone technologies by fostering innovation and economic growth.
