- The platform includes advanced facilities for testing hydrogen fuel cell electrical systems, core technology development, and equipment evaluation in ultra-low temperature environments.
- The initiative aims to support the development of eco-friendly fuel ships in line with IMO regulations, reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 100% by 2050, and enhance corporate competitiveness in the shipbuilding sector.
- The project not only focuses on hydrogen fuel storage and supply but also promotes key technologies like fuel cell-energy storage systems, paving the way for the future of hydrogen-powered ships.
The Busan Metropolitan Government and Pusan National University have collaborated to establish a groundbreaking eco-friendly hydrogen fuel ship research and development platform at the Uam Pier Marine Industrial Cluster in Busan, South Korea. The platform, also known as the hydrogen ship technology center, is set to be inaugurated with over 150 industry, academia, and research officials in attendance. With a total investment of 40.5 billion won, the center comprises four floors above ground and 50 advanced R&D facilities dedicated to studying and developing ships fueled by hydrogen. These facilities include equipment for testing and verifying the performance of hydrogen fuel cell electrical systems, making it a top-tier research institute in the field of hydrogen ship technology. The platform's focus on core technology development and equipment evaluation under extreme conditions, such as storing liquefied hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius, showcases its global competitiveness. This initiative aligns with the International Maritime Organization's environmental regulations, aiming to achieve a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from ships by 2050. By supporting the advancement of hydrogen ship technologies and enhancing corporate competitiveness in the shipbuilding sector, Busan is spearheading the development of eco-friendly fuel ships. The city's commitment to strengthening exporters' capabilities in areas like hydrogen fuel storage, fuel cell promotion, and fuel cell-energy storage systems highlights its strategic approach to future energy solutions.
