Klaipėda Port Authority has announced ambitious plans to invest EUR 308 million over the next four years to transform the port into a regional hub for green energy and transport. The investment will focus on enhancing infrastructure, maritime business value, and sustainability solutions, including the development of infrastructure for offshore wind energy projects on the Smeltė Peninsula. Existing quays will be reconstructed to handle heavier loads, aligning with the port's goal of becoming a leader in green energy. The port's sustainability efforts also include the development of a new 100-hectare area in the southern part of the port, alongside the construction of a new cruise ship terminal in the central city area. This terminal, set to be completed within three years, will feature recreational spaces, pedestrian paths, and cycling paths, emphasizing the integration of green infrastructure and innovation. Furthermore, the port will introduce a green hydrogen project utilizing a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyser to produce approximately 500 kilograms of hydrogen per day, with excess supply available for ships, railways, and public transport. This initiative underscores the port's commitment to sustainable development and green energy. In alignment with these efforts, LTG Group, Lithuania's national railway company, is exploring green hydrogen for freight transport on its network of 1,900 km. The country's focus on green energy infrastructure and innovation is evident in these collaborative efforts between Klaipėda Port Authority and LTG Group, showcasing Lithuania's commitment to a sustainable and environmentally friendly future.
