San Francisco Bay Ferry has unveiled an ambitious plan to convert its fleet to zero-emissions vessels by 2035, making it the largest electric maritime transport initiative in U.S. history. The operator's executive director, Seamus Murphy, announced the transition at a conference in Houston, outlining the shift from diesel to zero-emissions vessels after the completion of current builds. The US$250 million initiative, backed by California regulations and federal funding, aims to increase the fleet from 17 to 35 vessels, with new additions being battery electric. Innovative charging floats will be constructed to facilitate overnight and rapid charging. While hydrogen technology is being tested for longer routes, challenges such as infrastructure and cost have been identified, leading to a primary focus on battery electric vessels. The operator's emphasis on environmental improvements aligns with disaster preparedness and service quality, maintaining high passenger satisfaction and ridership recovery.
