The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in India has announced the launch of five pilot projects as part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission to trial hydrogen-fuelled vehicles across the country. These projects will deploy a total of 37 vehicles, including buses and trucks, on 10 different routes. Various major companies such as TATA Motors Ltd, Reliance Industries Limited, and NTPC are involved in these initiatives. The projects also include the establishment of 9 hydrogen refuelling stations. The total financial support from the Centre for these projects is estimated to be around Rs 208 crore, with a timeline of 18-24 months for their commissioning. The aim of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched in 2023 with a substantial budget, is to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen technology in India's transport sector. By supporting the deployment of green hydrogen in buses and trucks on a pilot basis, the mission seeks to drive decarbonisation, reduce reliance on fossil fuel imports, and position India as a global leader in clean energy. These pilot projects will play a crucial role in demonstrating the operational effectiveness, technical feasibility, and economic viability of hydrogen-based vehicles and refuelling stations in real-world conditions.
