The Indian government has initiated the National Green Hydrogen Mission with the launch of five pilot projects to integrate hydrogen as a fuel in buses and trucks. These projects will be implemented on various routes across the country, including Thiruvananthapuram-Kochi and Kochi-Edapally in Kerala, with a total of 37 vehicles and 9 hydrogen refueling stations. Major companies like TATA Motors Ltd, Reliance Industries Limited, and others have been awarded projects to explore hydrogen as a fuel in the transport sector. Financial support of approximately Rs. 208 crore has been allocated for these initiatives, which are expected to be operational within the next 18-24 months. The focus is on developing commercially viable technologies for using hydrogen in transport, alongside building essential infrastructure such as refueling stations. The objective is to support the gradual deployment of Green Hydrogen in buses and trucks, demonstrating safe operation, evaluating performance, and assessing economic viability. These pilot projects aim to lay the groundwork for the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered transport in India, emphasizing safety, efficiency, and sustainability.
